Overcoming Impatience

Defined as the ‘the feeling of wanting something to happen as soon as possible’, feeling irritated, stressed or even overwhelmed because something is not happening as quickly as you would like it to. Sound familiar?

Impatience is one of the emotions often felt by ambitious people, conscientious people or basically by people who are striving endlessly to make something happen. But does this continuous striving make the event happen quicker or does it make it slower?

As somebody who has struggled with impatience for a lot of my life, I have learnt the hard way. Being impatient does not speed things up but rather is just an annoying emotion that can take the joy out of the process and is best being got rid of.

Why get rid of impatience?

  • It can increase stress levels
  • Cause disturbances in sleep
  • Make you feel like you are on a hamster wheel
  • Lead to exhaustion
  • Can sometimes even have you lose momentum with your goals

What steps do you need to take?

As a Clinical Hypnotherapist, I work with a lot of people who are ambitious and want to achieve their life goals. I use the following steps in hypnosis to help them clear impatience and achieve their goals with less stress.

  1. Create a clear image of what you want to achieve. Nothing happens without the initial decision to make something new occur.
  2. Clear your mind – this is best done using hypnosis or meditation. A busy mind can hamper you from being clear about the steps you need to take.
  3. Connect into your intuition – using hypnosis. Ask yourself when you are in a deeply relaxed state, what are the steps you need to achieve to make your goal a reality. Listen to the guidance you are given. You know what is best for you – especially when you are listening to that deeper part of who you are.
  4. Take guided action every day. Get your ego out of the way, what do you need to do to make the task occur. Follow your intuitive voice, it always knows best.
  5. Realise that life is always ‘a work in progress’. We never get everything done. When you have this goal achieved, it will be replaced by the next one. Learn to enjoy the process.
  6. Lastly, visualise the destination while focusing on the journey. This is really important, one of the key mind programs of anxiety is caused by us focusing on the future and missing out on the now. Have a clear image of what you want to achieve, while at the same time embrace the journey of getting there.
